Elon Musk’s Starlink PH gets raise from House

In a resolution that the House of Representatives on Wednesday requested that Starlink Internet Services Philippines Inc., pending the grant of a congressional franchise, have the right to construct, personal, and run satellite ground stations, MANILA, Philippines.

At an 11-hour plenary session, which began at 3 p. m. on Tuesday, lawmakers voted around 2 a. m. on Wednesday to adopt House Resolution ( HR ) No. 2207, urging the National Telecommunications Commission to grant the power.

HR 2207 was a combination of methods filed by Bataan Rep. Albert Garcia, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, Ilocos Norte Rep. Angelo Barba, and the President’s child, Senior Deputy Majority Leader Sandro Marcos.

Two bills—House Bill No. 10954 and Senate Bill No. 2844 have already been filed in both chambers, but lawmakers have time constraints and have only a few sessions before the May election campaign time officially begins.

Human 2207 emphasized the importance that internet access has received from President Marcos, particularly in remote and rural areas, to enable effective learning and effective delivery of public services.

The measure cited a decision made by the Department of Information and Communications Technology ( DICT) to implement Executive Order No. 92. 127, which gave value-added services and internet service providers the right to construct and run broadband facilities in order to provide online services.

The DICT’s round, issued in 2021, set an accreditation framework for satellite service providers and/or operators to encourage them to create, individual, keep, and run satellite ground stations within the country.

In line with the House resolution, Starlink Philippines was the first wholly foreign-owned business to be authorized to offer Filipinos access to the internet, demonstrating the transformative potential of the country’s recent legal and regulatory environment.

If the requested telescope ground stations aren’t allowed to be installed as soon as possible, Starlink’s system needs to be expanded quickly, it continued. Its operations will be severely hampered by this.

Lawmakers also made the point that” Starlink’s internet service has proven beneficial to the Philippines and our state in addressing the country’s communication problems,” particularly on Pag-asa Island and other far-off places.
